Gomer
femaleDivided MonarchyMeaning: “Completion”
The unfaithful wife of the prophet Hosea, whose marriage God appointed as a living parable of Israel’s spiritual adultery and His redeeming love.
Biography
Gomer, the wife of the prophet Hosea, lived out one of the most poignant object lessons in all of Scripture. Her unfaithfulness and Hosea's costly love became a vivid picture of Israel's idolatry and the LORD's relentless, redeeming faithfulness.
A marriage commanded by God
The LORD told Hosea, "Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms… for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the LORD" (Hosea 1:2). Gomer bore three children whose names — Jezreel, Lo-ruhamah ("not pitied"), and Lo-ammi ("not my people") — preached judgment on the nation (Hosea 1:3–9).
Redeemed back
Gomer fell into adultery and slavery, yet God commanded Hosea, "Go yet, love a woman… according to the love of the LORD toward the children of Israel" (Hosea 3:1). Hosea bought her back for fifteen pieces of silver and barley. Their restored marriage embodied the gospel promise that God would say to the unloved, "Thou art my people" (Hosea 2:23).
