Huldah
femaleDivided MonarchyMeaning: “Weasel”
A prophetess in Jerusalem whom King Josiah’s officials consulted when the lost Book of the Law was found, confirming both coming judgment and Josiah’s reprieve.
Biography
Huldah was a prophetess in Jerusalem during the reign of the reforming king Josiah — one of the few women in Scripture to hold the prophetic office, and the one whose word authenticated the rediscovered Book of the Law.
Consulted by the king
When workers repairing the temple found "the book of the law," its warnings of judgment alarmed King Josiah. He sent his highest officials — including the high priest Hilkiah — not to a man but to Huldah, "and they communed with her" (2 Kings 22:14).
Her prophecy
Huldah confirmed that the curses of the book would surely fall on Judah for its idolatry, but assured Josiah that because his heart was tender and he had humbled himself, he would be gathered to his grave in peace before the disaster came (2 Kings 22:15–20). Her word helped launch Josiah's sweeping reforms and stands as a testimony to a woman trusted to speak for God at the highest level.
