Biography

Joanna was a woman of some standing — the wife of Chuza, the steward of Herod Antipas — who became a devoted follower of Jesus and one of the first witnesses to His resurrection.

Supporter of the ministry

Luke names her among the women who, having been "healed of evil spirits and infirmities," travelled with Jesus and the Twelve and "ministered unto him of their substance" (Luke 8:2–3). Her position in Herod's household made her support notable and possibly costly.

Witness at the tomb

Joanna was among the women who came to the tomb early on the first day of the week, found the stone rolled away, heard the angels' message that Jesus was risen, and carried the news to the apostles (Luke 24:10). She stands among the faithful women whose testimony opened the account of the resurrection.
