Lamech
maleAntediluvianMeaning: “Powerful; perhaps "lament"”
A descendant of Seth and the father of Noah, who prophesied that his son would bring comfort from the toil of the cursed ground.
Biography
Lamech belongs to the godly line of Seth (not to be confused with the boastful Lamech of Cain's line in Genesis 4:18–24). He is the son of Methuselah and the father of Noah.
A father's hope
At Noah's birth Lamech said, "This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed" (Genesis 5:29) — a longing for relief from the curse of Genesis 3, partly fulfilled in Noah's preservation of life through the flood. Lamech lived 777 years (Genesis 5:31) and appears in Luke's genealogy of Christ (Luke 3:36).
