Biography
Matthias was the disciple chosen to restore the number of the apostles to twelve after the fall of Judas Iscariot. In the days between the ascension and Pentecost, Peter stood before the gathered believers and proposed that one who had been with them "all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us" — a witness of the resurrection — should take Judas's place (Acts 1:21–22).
Chosen by lot
Two men were put forward: Joseph called Barsabas, and Matthias. After prayer that the Lord would "shew whether of these two thou hast chosen," they cast lots, "and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles" (Acts 1:23–26). Though Scripture says nothing further of him, Matthias took his place among the foundational witnesses of the risen Christ.
