Nathan
maleUnited MonarchyMeaning: “He (God) has given”
The court prophet who delivered God’s covenant promise to David, then boldly confronted the king over his sin with the parable "Thou art the man."
Biography
Nathan was the prophet of God in the court of King David — a faithful counselor who carried both God's greatest promise and His sharpest rebuke to the king.
The Davidic covenant
When David wished to build God a temple, Nathan brought the LORD's answer: David would not build the house, but God would build David a "house" — an everlasting dynasty: "thy throne shall be established for ever" (2 Samuel 7:16), the promise that points to Christ.
"Thou art the man"
After David's adultery and murder, Nathan confronted him with the parable of the rich man who stole the poor man's only lamb. When David burned with anger at the injustice, Nathan declared, "Thou art the man" (2 Samuel 12:7), leading the king to repentance.
Securing Solomon's throne
In David's last days, Nathan acted with Bathsheba to thwart Adonijah's attempted coup and secure the crown for Solomon (1 Kings 1:11–40). He stands as the model of the courageous prophet who speaks truth to power.
