Biography

Rahab of Jericho is one of the most remarkable conversions in the Old Testament — a Canaanite harlot who, by faith, sheltered Israel's spies, was spared in the city's destruction, and entered both the people of God and the genealogy of the Messiah.

Faith in Jericho

When two Israelite spies came to Jericho, Rahab hid them on her roof and turned away the king's men. Her confession was a clear act of faith: "the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath" (Joshua 2:11). She asked only that her family be spared.

The scarlet cord

The spies promised protection if she bound a scarlet cord in her window. When the walls of Jericho fell, Rahab and her household alone were saved, and "she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day" (Joshua 6:25).

Honored among the faithful

Hebrews lists her among the heroes of faith (Hebrews 11:31), and James cites her works as proof of living faith (James 2:25). She married Salmon and became the mother of Boaz — placing her, a redeemed outsider, in the line of David and of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5).
