Salome
femaleNew TestamentMeaning: “Peace”
A follower of Jesus, traditionally the mother of the apostles James and John, who served Him in Galilee, watched the crucifixion, and came to anoint His body.
Biography
Salome was one of the women who followed and served Jesus in Galilee and remained faithful through His death — traditionally identified as the mother of the apostles James and John, the sons of Zebedee.
Following from Galilee
Mark names Salome among the women who "followed him, and ministered unto him" in Galilee and who came up with Him to Jerusalem (Mark 15:40–41). Matthew's parallel speaks of "the mother of Zebedee's children," who once asked that her two sons might sit at Jesus' right and left in His kingdom (Matthew 20:20–21).
At the cross and the tomb
Salome stood watching the crucifixion from afar, and early on the first day of the week she came with spices to anoint Jesus' body — only to be met by the angel's announcement that He was risen (Mark 16:1–6). She is part of the company of faithful women whose devotion outlasted the fear of the men.
