Seth
maleAntediluvianMeaning: “Appointed; granted”
The third son of Adam and Eve, appointed by God in place of Abel. Through his line the godly remnant — and ultimately Noah and the Messiah — descended.
Biography
Seth is the third named son of Adam and Eve, given after the loss of Abel. Eve named him with hope: "God… hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew" (Genesis 4:25). Through Seth the line of promise continued.
A new beginning
Born when Adam was 130 (Genesis 5:3), Seth fathered Enos, and "then began men to call upon the name of the LORD" (Genesis 4:26) — a renewal of true worship in contrast to Cain's restless line. Genesis 5 traces the godly line of Seth down through Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech, and Noah.
Carrier of the promise
Seth lived 912 years (Genesis 5:8). Luke's genealogy of Jesus runs back through Seth to Adam (Luke 3:38), marking him as a vital link in the chain that leads from creation to Christ. His quiet life embodies the survival of faith across generations.
