Tola
maleJudgesMeaning: “Worm; scarlet”
A judge of the tribe of Issachar who arose after Abimelech and judged Israel twenty-three years.
Biography
Tola, the son of Puah, of the tribe of Issachar, was one of the so-called "minor" judges — leaders of whom Scripture records little beyond their tenure. He "arose to defend Israel" after the troubled reign of Abimelech, dwelt at Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim, and "judged Israel twenty and three years" before he died and was buried there (Judges 10:1–2). His quiet, stabilizing leadership gave Israel a long stretch of order after Abimelech's violence.
