River Ahava

Babylonia

River in Babylonia · today A canal/river in Babylonia (location unknown)

The river in Babylonia where Ezra gathered the returning exiles and proclaimed a fast before the journey home.

Overview

The river Ahava was a watercourse in Babylonia and the rallying point from which Ezra led a company of exiles back to Jerusalem. (It is also the name of the surrounding place.)

The gathering of the exiles

"I gathered them together to the river that runneth to Ahava; and there abode we in tents three days" (Ezra 8:15). Finding no Levites among them, Ezra sent for ministers for the house of God.

A fast for safe passage

"Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way" — for Ezra was "ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers," trusting God's hand instead (Ezra 8:21–23).

The treasure entrusted

By the Ahava he weighed out the gold, silver, and temple vessels to the priests, and "we departed from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go unto Jerusalem" (Ezra 8:24–31).
