Location

Overview

Bozrah was a principal city of Edom, set in the rugged highlands south-east of the Dead Sea. It stands in the prophets as a symbol of proud, doomed Edom.

An old Edomite city

Bozrah appears already among the kings of Edom: "Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned" (Genesis 36:33).

The oracle of judgment

The prophets pronounced its fall: "the LORD hath a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Idumea [Edom]" (Isaiah 34:6); "Bozrah shall become a desolation" (Jeremiah 49:13; cf. Amos 1:12).

The warrior from Bozrah

Isaiah's haunting vision pictures the LORD coming as a conqueror "from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah... travelling in the greatness of his strength" — treading the winepress of judgment alone (Isaiah 63:1–3).
