Overview
Mount Nebo rises in the highlands of Moab, east of the Jordan and the Dead Sea, looking across to the land of Canaan. It is the place of Moses' last sight and his death.
The view of the Promised Land
At the LORD's command Moses "went up... unto the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah," and God showed him all the land — Gilead, Dan, Judah, and the plain of Jericho — saying, "I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not go over thither" (Deuteronomy 34:1–4).
The death of Moses
There Moses, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of 120 with eye undimmed and strength unabated, and was buried in a valley in Moab, "but no man knoweth of his sepulchre" (Deuteronomy 34:5–7).
A mountain of farewell
From Nebo the leadership passed to Joshua, and Israel prepared at last to cross the Jordan into the land Moses had only seen from afar.
