Overview
Nain was a small village on the slope of the hill of Moreh, south of Mount Tabor. One unforgettable miracle is tied to its gate.
The widow's son
As Jesus approached the town gate, a dead man was being carried out — "the only son of his mother, and she was a widow." Moved with compassion, Jesus said, "Weep not." He touched the bier and said, "Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak" (Luke 7:11–15).
Awe and report
"There came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us" (Luke 7:16), and the news spread throughout the region.
A sign of compassion
The raising at Nain — one of three people Jesus raised from death in the Gospels — shows his tender mercy toward the grieving and his power over death itself.
