Gideon’s Pitchers and Lamps

The Judges

Meaning: “Empty jars hiding torches

Earthen vessels broken so the light blazes out — power belongs to God.

The clay jars hiding torches that Gideon’s 300 men smashed to rout the army of Midian.

What It Was

Gideon armed his three hundred men with trumpets and “empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers” (Judges 7:16). At his signal they broke the jars, blew the trumpets, and cried, “The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon,” and the Midianite host fled in panic (Judges 7:19–22).

Biblical Significance & Symbolism

The strategy preached the lesson God intended: victory by the few, not the many, so Israel could not boast (Judges 7:2). Paul echoes the image — “we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God” (2 Corinthians 4:7): the jar must break for the light to shine.
