The Two Stone Tablets

The Two Stone Tablets were the stone tablets upon which God inscribed the Ten Commandments during Israel's journey from Egypt to the Promised Land.

While Moses communed with God on Mount Sinai, God personally engraved the covenant laws onto two tablets of stone. These tablets represented the covenant relationship between God and Israel and became the foundational document of Israel's national and spiritual life.

When Moses descended the mountain and discovered Israel worshipping the golden calf, he shattered the original tablets as a visible sign that the covenant had been broken. God later commanded Moses to carve a second set of tablets, upon which God again wrote the covenant words.

The tablets were eventually placed inside the Ark of the Covenant, where they remained as a perpetual testimony before God.

Scripture does not provide the exact dimensions of the tablets, but it emphasizes their divine origin.

The first tablets were entirely the work of God.

"The tablets were God's work, and the writing was God's writing, engraved on the tablets." (Exodus 32:16)

After the covenant was broken through Israel's idolatry, Moses was instructed to cut two new stone tablets similar to the first.

God then rewrote the covenant words upon them.

The tablets contained the Ten Commandments, often called:

• The Testimony

• The Covenant

• The Words of the Covenant

• The Ten Words (Decalogue)

They were eventually stored inside the Ark of the Covenant beneath the Mercy Seat.

The Two Stone Tablets represent God's holy standard and covenant relationship with His people.

Divine Authority

Unlike other ancient law codes, these commandments originated directly from God Himself. The tablets demonstrated that God's law was not merely human wisdom but divine revelation.

Covenant Relationship

The tablets served as the covenant document between God and Israel, similar to treaty documents preserved between kings and their subjects in the ancient world.

Human Sinfulness

The breaking of the first tablets dramatically illustrated humanity's inability to keep God's law perfectly. Before Moses even descended the mountain, Israel had already violated the covenant through idolatry.

Christ and the New Covenant

The stone tablets point beyond themselves to Christ.

Jesus perfectly fulfilled the Law and established a New Covenant written not on stone but on human hearts.

As foretold by Jeremiah and fulfilled through the Holy Spirit, God's law would one day be internal rather than external.

The Law and Grace

The tablets reveal God's holiness and righteousness while exposing humanity's need for salvation. They prepare the way for the gospel by demonstrating that no one can achieve righteousness through law-keeping alone.

The original tablets were shattered by Moses at the foot of Mount Sinai after Israel worshipped the golden calf.

A second set of tablets was subsequently created at God's command.

These replacement tablets were placed inside the Ark of the Covenant and remained there throughout Israel's wilderness wanderings and much of its later history.

The Bible does not record the final fate of the tablets. Since they were housed inside the Ark of the Covenant, their ultimate fate is tied to the mystery surrounding the Ark's disappearance before the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem.

Their physical location today is unknown.
