What It Was

At a wedding in Cana, “there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews,” each holding two or three firkins (John 2:6). Jesus had them filled with water; when drawn out it had become wine — the best of the feast (John 2:7–10).

Biblical Significance & Symbolism

John calls it “the beginning of miracles” by which Jesus “manifested forth his glory” (John 2:11). The water of Jewish purification becoming the wine of the wedding hints at the new joy and the new covenant Jesus brings, surpassing the old forms.
