Elisheba
femaleExodusMeaning: “God is my oath”
The wife of Aaron and mother of Israel’s first priestly line — Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar; sister of Nahshon, prince of Judah.
Biography
Elisheba was the wife of Aaron, Israel's first high priest, and the matriarch of the priestly line. She was "the daughter of Amminadab, sister of Naashon" (Exodus 6:23) — linking the houses of Levi (the priesthood) and Judah (from which the king and Messiah would come), since her brother Nahshon was prince of Judah.
Mother of the priesthood
Elisheba bore Aaron four sons — Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar — all consecrated as priests. Hers was a household of both great honor and great sorrow: two of her sons, Nadab and Abihu, died offering "strange fire" before the LORD (Leviticus 10:1–2), while through Eleazar and Ithamar the priesthood of Israel continued for generations.
