Eleazar
maleExodusMeaning: “God has helped”
The third son of Aaron who succeeded him as high priest, served alongside Moses and Joshua, and helped divide the Promised Land among the tribes.
Biography
Eleazar was the third son of Aaron and, after the deaths of his elder brothers Nadab and Abihu, the heir to the high priesthood. He served faithfully through the wilderness years and into the conquest of Canaan.
Succeeding Aaron
When Aaron died on Mount Hor, Moses stripped him of the high-priestly garments and put them on Eleazar, who became the high priest of Israel (Numbers 20:26–28). He stood with Moses in numbering the people and assisting in the great decisions of the camp.
Dividing the land
God appointed that Joshua should stand before "Eleazar the priest, who shall ask counsel for him after the judgment of Urim" (Numbers 27:21). Together, Eleazar and Joshua led the division of the Promised Land among the tribes by lot (Joshua 14:1). His son Phinehas carried the priestly line forward.
