Esther
femaleExileMeaning: “Star (Persian) / Hadassah, "myrtle" (Hebrew)”
A Jewish exile who became queen of Persia and risked her life to expose Haman’s plot, delivering her people from genocide — the deliverance remembered at Purim.
Biography
Esther — Hadassah by her Hebrew name — was a Jewish orphan in exile who rose to become queen of the Persian Empire and, at the risk of her own life, saved her people from annihilation. Though the book that bears her name never mentions God directly, His hidden providence governs every turn.
From orphan to queen
Raised by her cousin Mordecai after her parents' death, Esther was chosen by King Ahasuerus (Xerxes) to be queen in place of Vashti, concealing her Jewish identity at Mordecai's instruction (Esther 2:7–17).
Haman's plot
When Mordecai refused to bow to the king's favorite, Haman, the enraged official secured a decree to destroy all the Jews of the empire on a single day (Esther 3).
"For such a time as this"
Mordecai urged Esther to plead with the king, warning that she had perhaps come to the kingdom "for such a time as this" (Esther 4:14). Resolving "if I perish, I perish" (Esther 4:16), she fasted, then approached the king uninvited and invited him and Haman to a banquet.
Deliverance and reversal
At the banquet Esther exposed Haman's plot. He was hanged on the very gallows he had built for Mordecai, and a counter-decree allowed the Jews to defend themselves and triumph (Esther 7–8).
The feast of Purim
Esther and Mordecai established the annual feast of Purim to commemorate the deliverance (Esther 9:26–32) — a celebration Jewish communities keep to this day.
