Biography

Vashti was the queen of Persia whose dismissal opens the book of Esther. Her refusal to obey a drunken king's summons set in motion the events that brought Esther to the throne and, through her, the deliverance of the Jews.

The king's command

At the climax of a lavish, week-long feast, King Ahasuerus, "merry with wine," commanded that Queen Vashti be brought out wearing her royal crown "to shew the people and the princes her beauty" (Esther 1:10–11).

Her refusal and removal

Vashti refused to come, and the king, enraged and counselled that her defiance would embolden every wife in the empire, deposed her by irrevocable decree (Esther 1:12–19). The search for a new queen then began — and "the king loved Esther above all the women" (Esther 2:17). Vashti's fall, whatever its motive, became the providential doorway for Esther's rise.
