Biography

Ezra, a priest descended from Aaron and "a ready scribe in the law of Moses" (Ezra 7:6), led a second company of exiles home from Babylon and gave his life to recovering, teaching, and applying the Word of God. He is remembered as the great reformer who re-centered the nation on Scripture.

A scribe sent home

With the favor of Artaxerxes, Ezra led a caravan of exiles to Jerusalem, refusing a military escort and trusting God for protection on the dangerous journey (Ezra 8:22–23). He came resolved to do one thing: "Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments" (Ezra 7:10).

Grief over compromise

Finding that many had intermarried with the surrounding peoples in violation of the Law, Ezra tore his garment, fell on his knees, and confessed the nation's sin in a heartfelt prayer that led the people to repentance and reform (Ezra 9–10).

Reading the Law

Years later, before the assembled people, Ezra "brought the law before the congregation" and read it from morning until midday while the Levites explained the sense, so the people understood (Nehemiah 8:3–8). The reading sparked tears, then joy, then renewed obedience — a turning point in restoring Israel as a people of the Book.
