Hezron
malePatriarchalMeaning: “Enclosed; surrounded by a wall”
A son of Perez who went down to Egypt with Jacob; a direct ancestor of Boaz, David, and Jesus in the line of Judah.
Biography
Hezron was a son of Perez and grandson of Judah, named among the household of Jacob that went down into Egypt (Genesis 46:12). Though Scripture records little of his life, his place in the genealogy is significant: he stands in the direct royal line of Judah.
In the line of the Messiah
The genealogy that closes the book of Ruth runs straight through him — "Pharez begat Hezron, And Hezron begat Ram… Jesse begat David" (Ruth 4:18–22) — and Matthew names "Esrom" (Hezron) in the ancestry of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:3). He is thus an essential, if quiet, link between the patriarchs and the throne of David.
