Jephthah
maleJudgesMeaning: “He opens; whom God sets free”
An outcast warrior of Gilead recalled to lead Israel against Ammon, who won victory but bound himself by a tragic, rash vow.
Biography
Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior and judge whose life turned on faith, courage, and one tragic, rash vow. Driven out by his half-brothers because he was the son of a harlot, he became leader of a band of men in the land of Tob (Judges 11:1–3).
Recalled to lead
When the Ammonites warred against Israel, the elders of Gilead begged Jephthah to lead them. He pressed his case against Ammon with a careful historical and theological argument before going to battle (Judges 11:12–27).
The rash vow
Jephthah vowed that if God gave him victory, he would offer whatever first came out of his house to meet him. He triumphed over Ammon — but his only child, his daughter, came out to greet him with timbrels and dances. He kept his vow at terrible cost (Judges 11:30–39), a sobering warning against rash words before God.
Remembered in faith
Despite his flaws, Jephthah is listed among the heroes of faith who "subdued kingdoms" (Hebrews 11:32–33), and Samuel later named him among Israel's God-sent deliverers (1 Samuel 12:11).
