Samson
maleJudgesMeaning: “Of the sun / sunlight”
A Nazirite judge of extraordinary strength who fought the Philistines, was betrayed by Delilah, and brought down their temple in his death.
Biography
Samson is the most paradoxical of Israel's judges — endowed by God's Spirit with superhuman strength, yet undone by his own appetites. His twenty-year career (Judges 13–16) is a story of grace working through a deeply flawed man.
A Nazirite from birth
The angel of the LORD announced his birth to the barren wife of Manoah, a Danite, declaring the child would be a Nazirite to God and "begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines" (Judges 13:5). No razor was to touch his head.
Strength and conflict
The Spirit of the LORD repeatedly came mightily upon Samson — he tore a lion apart, struck down thirty men, and killed a thousand with the jawbone of a donkey (Judges 14:6; 15:15). Yet his impulsiveness and entanglements with Philistine women drew him into endless conflict.
Delilah and betrayal
Lured by Delilah, Samson at last revealed that his strength lay in his unshorn hair — the sign of his Nazirite vow. She betrayed him; the Philistines shaved his head, put out his eyes, and bound him to grind in the prison house (Judges 16:21).
Death and deliverance
As his hair grew back, so did his strength. Brought out to entertain a temple full of Philistine lords, Samson prayed once more and pushed apart the pillars, crying, "Let me die with the Philistines" (Judges 16:30). He killed more in his death than in his life.
Legacy
For all his failures, Samson is listed among the heroes of faith (Hebrews 11:32) — a reminder that God can accomplish deliverance even through broken instruments.
