Biography

Lydia, a seller of purple cloth from Thyatira living in Philippi, holds the distinction of being the first recorded Christian convert on European soil. Her conversion and hospitality launched the church at Philippi.

A heart opened

On the Sabbath, Paul met a group of women praying by the riverside. Among them was Lydia, "a seller of purple… which worshipped God." As she listened, "the Lord opened" her heart "that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul" (Acts 16:14). She and her household were baptized.

Hospitality to the church

Lydia immediately opened her home: "If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us" (Acts 16:15). Her house became a gathering place for the believers, and after Paul and Silas were released from prison, they returned there to encourage the brethren (Acts 16:40).
