Biography

Og was the king of Bashan, a remnant of the Rephaim — the ancient race of giants. His enormous "bedstead of iron" was nine cubits long (about thirteen feet), a detail Scripture preserves as a measure of his stature (Deuteronomy 3:11).

Defeated at Edrei

After defeating Sihon, Israel turned toward Bashan, and Og came out to battle at Edrei. The LORD told Moses, "Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand" (Numbers 21:34). Israel struck down Og, his sons, and all his people, and took his sixty fortified cities (Deuteronomy 3:3–5).

A monument of God's power

The conquest of "Og the king of Bashan" joined Sihon as a standing testimony to God's deliverance, remembered in Israel's songs and recounted to later generations (Psalm 135:11; 136:20). His defeat opened the rich land east of the Jordan for the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh.
