Edrei

Bashan

City in Bashan · today Dera’a, southern Syria

The city of Bashan where Israel defeated the giant king Og.

Location

Overview

Edrei was a chief city of Bashan and the site of the decisive battle against Og, the last of the giant kings east of the Jordan.

The battle with Og

"They turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at Edrei" (Numbers 21:33). Though God told Israel not to fear him, Og was a fearsome foe.

The last of the giants

Moses recalls the victory: "Og the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Astaroth and at Edrei" was defeated, and his great iron bedstead, nine cubits long, became a token of his stature (Deuteronomy 3:1, 11).

A city of Manasseh

Edrei passed to the half-tribe of Manasseh in the division of the eastern land (Joshua 13:31).
