Overview

Derbe was the easternmost city Paul reached on his first missionary journey, beyond Lystra, where the mission met with peaceful success.

Many disciples

After Lystra, "they... fled... unto Derbe... And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch" (Acts 14:20–21).

The turning point

From Derbe the apostles turned back, retracing their steps to strengthen the new churches, "confirming the souls of the disciples... that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God" (Acts 14:22).

The home of Gaius

Derbe was the home of Gaius, one of the companions who later travelled with Paul (Acts 20:4).
