The mountain where Abraham offered Isaac — later the site of Solomon’s temple.

Overview

The land of Moriah is where Abraham's faith met its hardest test, and where, centuries later, the temple of the LORD would stand.

The offering of Isaac

God said, "Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac... and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains" of Moriah (Genesis 22:2). Abraham obeyed; as he raised the knife, the angel of the LORD stopped him, and a ram caught in a thicket was offered instead.

The LORD will provide

Abraham named the place Jehovah-jireh, "the LORD will provide" — "as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen" (Genesis 22:14), a foreshadowing of God providing the true Lamb.

The temple mount

"Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem in mount Moriah, where the LORD appeared unto David" (2 Chronicles 3:1) — the same height where Abraham's hand was stayed.
