Overview
Sardis was the ancient capital of Lydia, once the realm of the proverbially rich King Croesus. By New Testament times it traded on past glory — a fitting setting for the fifth letter of Revelation.
A name to be alive
Christ, who "hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars," delivered a stinging verdict: "thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead" (Revelation 3:1).
"Be watchful"
He called them to "be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain," warning, "if therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief" (Revelation 3:2–3) — words that would sting a city twice captured by stealth in its history.
A faithful few
Yet "thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white." The overcomer would be clothed in white and his name kept in the book of life (Revelation 3:4–5).

Sardis (modern Sart) was fabulously wealthy under the Lydian kings and was where coinage is thought to have been invented. Its acropolis was famously thought impregnable — yet was captured twice by surprise night assaults, a history that gives sharp point to Christ's warning to "watch."
