Overview
Taberah — "burning" — was an early station after Israel left Sinai, remembered for a sharp act of judgment on the people's complaining.
Fire among the people
"When the people complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp" (Numbers 11:1).
The name of warning
When the people cried to Moses and he prayed, the fire was quenched. "And he called the name of the place Taberah: because the fire of the LORD burnt among them" (Numbers 11:3).
Remembered in warning
Moses later listed Taberah among the places where Israel "provoked the LORD to wrath" (Deuteronomy 9:22), a milestone of the wilderness generation's rebellion.
