The Empty Tomb

The Resurrection

Meaning: “The garden sepulchre, found empty

The empty grave — proof that “he is risen.”

The borrowed rock tomb where Jesus was buried — found empty on the third day, the heart of the gospel.

What It Was

Jesus was laid in the new tomb of Joseph of Arimathea, hewn in rock, sealed with a great stone (Matthew 27:59–60). On the first day of the week the women found the stone rolled away and the tomb empty; an angel announced, “He is not here: for he is risen, as he said” (Matthew 28:6).

Biblical Significance & Symbolism

The empty tomb is the foundation of the Christian faith: “if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain” (1 Corinthians 15:17). The grave clothes left in order (John 20:6–7) and the risen appearances testify that death is conquered and resurrection life is sure for all who are in Christ.
