The Seamless Robe

The Passion

Meaning: “A coat woven without seam

Prophecy fulfilled at the cross — “they parted my garments.”

Jesus’ seamless tunic, for which the soldiers cast lots at the cross rather than tear it.

What It Was

At the crucifixion the soldiers divided Jesus’ garments, but “the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.” Rather than tear it, they cast lots for it (John 19:23–24), unknowingly fulfilling Scripture.

Biblical Significance & Symbolism

John notes this fulfilled Psalm 22:18: “They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots.” Even the soldiers’ careless gambling served the precise word of prophecy at Calvary.
