The Loaves and Fishes
Miracles of JesusMeaning: “The food multiplied to feed the multitudes”
Christ the giver of bread — and the Bread of Life himself.
The few loaves and fish Jesus multiplied to feed thousands — the only miracle in all four Gospels.
What It Was
With five loaves and two fishes Jesus fed five thousand men, besides women and children, and twelve baskets of fragments remained (Matthew 14:17–21). He later fed four thousand from seven loaves (Matthew 15:34–38). The feeding of the five thousand is the only miracle recorded in all four Gospels.
Biblical Significance & Symbolism
The sign pointed beyond physical bread. The next day Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger” (John 6:35). The little, placed in his hands, became more than enough — a pattern of how Christ uses what is offered to him.
