What It Was
At the burning bush God turned Moses’ staff into a serpent and back, making it the sign of his commission (Exodus 4:2–4). Thereafter Moses “took the rod of God in his hand” (Exodus 4:20): with it he brought the plagues, divided the Red Sea (Exodus 14:16), and brought water from the rock.
Biblical Significance & Symbolism
The rod shows how God uses what is already in our hand once it is yielded to him. The power was never in the wood but in the God who commanded it — the staff simply marked where his hand was at work.
