Biography

Bezaleel, of the tribe of Judah and grandson of Hur, holds a notable distinction: he is the first person in the Bible specifically said to be "filled… with the spirit of God" — and that filling was for skilled craftsmanship.

Called by name

The LORD told Moses, "I have called by name Bezaleel… and I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding… to devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass" (Exodus 31:2–4).

Builder of the tabernacle

With his assistant Aholiab, Bezaleel oversaw the construction of the tabernacle, the ark of the covenant, the table, the lampstand, the altars, and the priestly garments (Exodus 36–39). He stands as Scripture's pattern of God-given artistic skill devoted wholly to worship.
