Gershon was the eldest of Levi's three sons (Genesis 46:11), the head of one of the three great divisions of the Levites. He went down to Egypt with Jacob's household. In the later organization of Israel's worship, the Gershonites were assigned the care and transport of the tabernacle's curtains, coverings, and hangings (Numbers 3:25–26) — a sacred trust within the priestly tribe descended from Levi.
