Kohath
malePatriarchalMeaning: “Assembly; obedience”
The second son of Levi and ancestor of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam through his son Amram; head of the Kohathite clan that carried the ark.
Biography
Kohath was the second son of Levi (Genesis 46:11) and the most prominent of the three Levite clan-heads, for from him descended Israel's great leaders. He was the father of Amram, who married Jochebed — and their children were Moses, Aaron, and Miriam (Exodus 6:18–20).
The Kohathites
Kohath lived 133 years (Exodus 6:18). In the wilderness, his descendants the Kohathites were given the most sacred duty of all the Levites: to carry the ark of the covenant and the holy furnishings of the tabernacle (Numbers 4:4–15). Through Kohath came both the high-priestly line of Aaron and the prophet Moses.
