Merari
malePatriarchalMeaning: “Bitter; strong”
The third son of Levi and head of the Merarite clan of Levites, charged with carrying the tabernacle’s frames, bars, and pillars.
Biography
Merari was the third and youngest son of Levi (Genesis 46:11), head of the last of the three Levite divisions. He came into Egypt with Jacob's household. In the service of the tabernacle, the Merarites were entrusted with the heavy structural elements — the boards, bars, pillars, sockets, and pins of the tabernacle frame (Numbers 3:36–37) — completing, with the Gershonites and Kohathites, the threefold Levite ministry that descended from Levi.
