Biography

Jeremiah, a priest of Anathoth, prophesied for some forty years through Judah's final decline and the fall of Jerusalem. Called "the weeping prophet" for his grief over his people's sin and suffering, he proclaimed both unflinching judgment and the promise of a new covenant.

Called from the womb

God told him, "Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee… I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations" (Jeremiah 1:5). Jeremiah pleaded that he was only a child, but God promised to put His words in his mouth.

A message of judgment and tears

For decades he warned that Judah's idolatry would bring Babylonian conquest, urging surrender to God's discipline. He was beaten, put in stocks, thrown into a miry dungeon, and branded a traitor, yet could not stay silent, for God's word was "as a burning fire shut up in my bones" (Jeremiah 20:9).

The new covenant

Amid the gloom Jeremiah saw a radiant hope: a day when God would make "a new covenant," writing His law on the heart and forgiving sin (Jeremiah 31:31–34) — words the New Testament applies to Christ (Hebrews 8:8–12).

After the fall

When Jerusalem fell in 586 BC, Jeremiah was freed by the Babylonians (Jeremiah 39:11–12). Against his counsel, the survivors fled to Egypt, taking him with them, where tradition holds he died. The book of Lamentations preserves his grief over the ruined city.
