Zedekiah
maleDivided MonarchyMeaning: “The LORD is righteousness”
The last king of Judah, installed by Babylon, whose rebellion brought the destruction of Jerusalem; he saw his sons killed, then was blinded and carried to Babylon.
Biography
Zedekiah was the last king of Judah, placed on the throne by Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon after the exile of his nephew Jehoiachin. He "did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD" and would not humble himself before the prophet Jeremiah, who spoke the word of the LORD to him (2 Chronicles 36:11–12).
Rebellion and ruin
Against Jeremiah's repeated warnings, Zedekiah rebelled against Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar besieged Jerusalem for eighteen months until famine broke the city (2 Kings 25:1–4).
A terrible end
Zedekiah fled but was captured near Jericho. The Babylonians killed his sons before his eyes, then put out his eyes, bound him in chains, and carried him to Babylon (2 Kings 25:6–7). With him fell Jerusalem and the temple — the beginning of the Babylonian exile that Jeremiah and the prophets had long foretold.
