Overview
Sidon (Hebrew Zidon) was one of the oldest and greatest cities of Phoenicia, a seafaring power so dominant that the Phoenicians as a whole were often called "Sidonians."
An ancient power
Sidon is named from the table of nations onward as the firstborn of Canaan (Genesis 10:15), and "great Zidon" marked the northern reach of the land (Joshua 11:8; 19:28).
Jezebel and Baal
Ahab "took to wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served Baal" (1 Kings 16:31) — so Sidon became a fountainhead of the Baal worship that Elijah opposed. Solomon too had been drawn to "Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians" (1 Kings 11:5).
Sidon in the Gospels
Jesus ministered in the coasts of Tyre and Sidon (Mark 7:31), and held up the widow-feeding miracle in nearby Zarephath "a city of Sidon" as a rebuke to unbelieving Israel (Luke 4:26).
