Pontius Pilate
maleNew TestamentMeaning: “Armed with a javelin (Pilate)”
The Roman governor who tried Jesus, declared he found no fault in Him, washed his hands of the matter, yet delivered Him to be crucified.
Biography
Pontius Pilate was the Roman prefect (governor) of Judea who presided over the trial of Jesus. His name is enshrined in the creed — Jesus "suffered under Pontius Pilate."
"I find no fault in him"
When the Jewish leaders brought Jesus to him, Pilate examined Him and repeatedly declared, "I find in him no fault at all" (John 18:38; 19:4, 6). He tried to release Jesus — offering Barabbas instead, sending Him to Herod, and finally scourging Him — but yielded to the crowd's cry, "Crucify him."
Washing his hands
Pilate "took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person" (Matthew 27:24) — yet handed Jesus over to be crucified. He fastened to the cross the title "JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS," and refused to change it: "What I have written I have written" (John 19:19–22). His weakness before political pressure made him the human judge who condemned the innocent Son of God.
