The Purple Robe

The Passion

Meaning: “The robe of mock royalty

Mock royalty draped on the true King of kings.

The purple robe the soldiers threw on Jesus to mock his claim to be a king.

What It Was

The soldiers stripped Jesus and “put on him a purple robe” (John 19:2; “a scarlet robe,” Matthew 27:28), pressed on the crown of thorns, and hailed him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” Pilate brought him out still wearing it: “Behold the man!” (John 19:5).

Biblical Significance & Symbolism

The robe of ridicule clothed the one who is truly King. The mockery unwittingly proclaimed the gospel — he is King — and the royal robe over a scourged back shows a King who reigns through suffering. Soon he will be clothed in “a vesture dipped in blood,” King of kings (Revelation 19:13, 16).
