Biography

Titus was a Greek convert and one of Paul's most trusted co-workers. As a Gentile believer, he became a test case at the Jerusalem Council, where Paul refused to have him circumcised — a stand for the freedom of the gospel (Galatians 2:1–3).

A reliable troubleshooter

Paul repeatedly sent Titus on difficult missions, especially to the troubled church at Corinth, and rejoiced at the comfort his return brought: "God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus" (2 Corinthians 7:6). Paul called him "my partner and fellowhelper" (2 Corinthians 8:23).

Pastor of Crete

Paul left Titus on the island of Crete "to set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city" (Titus 1:5), and wrote him the pastoral letter of Titus, emphasizing sound doctrine joined to good works and the grace of God "that bringeth salvation" appearing to all men (Titus 2:11).
