Location

Overview

Peniel (also Penuel) was a place by the ford of the Jabbok river in Gilead, east of the Jordan. It is forever marked by Jacob's night of wrestling.

Jacob wrestles with God

The night before meeting Esau, Jacob sent his family across the brook and was left alone. "And there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day" (Genesis 32:24). Jacob held on, refusing to let go without a blessing, though his thigh was put out of joint.

A new name

The man said, "Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed" (Genesis 32:28).

"I have seen God"

Jacob named the place Peniel — "for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved" (Genesis 32:30). He crossed over as the sun rose, limping on his hip, a changed man.

Archaeology & History

Peniel/Penuel lay near the Jabbok (the modern Zarqa river) in what is now Jordan; its precise site is uncertain. The town reappears later in the Bible — Gideon tore down its tower (Judges 8:17) and Jeroboam fortified it (1 Kings 12:25) — confirming a real location on the eastern frontier.
