Ephesians 2:8
2:7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
KJV
for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
What does Ephesians 2:8 mean?
Salvation is by grace, received through faith, and even that is not our own achievement but God's gift — which rules out all boasting.
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God." With Ephesians 2:9, this is one of Scripture's clearest statements of salvation by grace.
Context
Paul has just described people "dead in trespasses and sins" whom God "made... alive together with Christ" (Ephesians 2:1-5). Verse 8 names the means of that rescue, and verse 9 draws the conclusion: "not of works, lest any man should boast."
Key words
"Grace" (charis) is God's unearned favor; "faith" is the empty hand that receives it. Interpreters debate what "that" refers to in "that not of yourselves" — faith, grace, or the whole salvation — but the thrust is plain: nothing in our salvation, including our believing, originates as our own accomplishment.
How it has been read
This verse has anchored the church's confession that we are saved by grace alone, through faith alone. Good works follow — we are "created in Christ Jesus unto good works" (Ephesians 2:10) — but as the fruit of salvation, never its price.
