Philippians 4:13
4:12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
KJV
I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.
What does Philippians 4:13 mean?
Paul's confidence is not in his own strength but in Christ who strengthens him — the secret of contentment in plenty and in want alike.
"I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." Lifted from its context this line can sound like a slogan for personal achievement; in context it is something deeper and steadier.
Context
Paul writes from prison, thanking the Philippians for their gift (Philippians 4:10-19). Just before this verse he says he has "learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content," knowing "how to be abased, and... how to abound" (Philippians 4:11-12). "All things," then, are first of all these things — the full range of circumstances, from hunger to plenty.
Key words
The verb behind "strengtheneth" pictures Christ pouring in power. The "I can" is not self-sufficiency but Christ-sufficiency: Paul's capacity to endure and to be content is a gift from the One who upholds him.
How it has been read
The church has heard here a promise of grace to persevere through whatever God allows — strength to suffer well, to serve, to be faithful — rather than a promise of unlimited success. The same Paul wrote of a "thorn" God did not remove, hearing instead, "My grace is sufficient for thee" (2 Corinthians 12:9). Verse 13 is the contentment of a person whose strength is located outside himself, in Christ.
