Jacob’s Ladder
The PatriarchsMeaning: “The stairway to heaven”
Heaven opened to earth — fulfilled in Christ.
The ladder set up to heaven that Jacob saw in a dream at Bethel, with angels ascending and descending.
What It Was
Fleeing from Esau, Jacob slept at Luz and dreamed of “a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it” (Genesis 28:12). The LORD stood above it and renewed the covenant promises. Jacob called the place Bethel — “house of God.”
Biblical Significance & Symbolism
Jesus applied the vision to himself: “ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man” (John 1:51). He is the true ladder — the one Mediator who joins heaven and earth.
